Error 80154016 occurs when try to change the Microsoft account associated with your Xbox Live profile.

Problem

You see the subsequent error code and message once you try and modification the Microsoft account that's according to your Xbox Live profile:

This issue can occur if one of the following conditions is true:
  • There’s a problem with your Microsoft account. For example, the Microsoft account might have been deleted or blocked, or there may be a problem with the security information in the account.
  • Your Microsoft account is associated with two gamertags.

Solutions

Solution 1: Verify that you are not signed with the old Microsoft account
To resolve this issue, verify that you are not signed in with the old Microsoft account on another device. For example, verify that you are not signed in with the old Microsoft account on your home computer or smartphone. If you are signed in on another device, sign out and then try again to associate your profile with a different Microsoft account.

Solution 2: Verify the information for your Microsoft account
  1. Sign in to your Microsoft account. Note If you have forgotten your password or can’t sign in by using your password, reset your password.
  2. Note any error messages that are displayed.
  3. After you resolve any errors, verify the information for your Microsoft account. For example, verify the billing information and the information in the Password and security info section.
  4. Sign out of your Microsoft Account and then sign in again.
  5. Sign in to Xbox Live and try to download your profile again.
Solution 3: Try to sign in at Xbox.com
  1. Click Microsoft Sign In at the top of any xbox.com page, such as this one.
  2. Type the user name and password for your Microsoft account, and then click Sign In.
Solution 4: Clear the system cache
  1. Press the Guide button on your system.
  2. Go to Settings and select System Settings.
  3. Select Storage or Memory.
  4. Highlight any storage device, and then press Y on your controller.
  5. It doesn't matter which storage device you select; the cache will be cleared for all storage devices.
  6. Select Clear System Cache.
  7. When prompted to confirm storage device maintenance, select Yes.
Solution 5: Move and then re-download your Xbox Live profile
  1. Format a spare USB flash drive as a Memory Unit.
  2. Move your profile to the flash drive that you formatted in step 1. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Plug the USB memory stick into your console.
    2. Go to settings and select Storage.
    3. Select All Devices.
    4. Select Gamer Profiles, and then select your gamer profile.
    5. Select Move.
    6. Select the USB flash drive that you want to move your profile to.
    7. Remove the USB flash drive from your console.
  3. Re-download your profile. For help, see Download, move or delete your Xbox Live profile.

How to delete your Microsoft account and personal information associated with it?

When you signed up for an Xbox gamer tag, you associated that account with a Microsoft account. This is required for all Xbox Live content downloads and services.


For more information about Microsoft account management, including how to change the Microsoft account linked to your gamer tag, see Manage account support. Be aware that you can’t currently move a gamer tag from one Microsoft account to another.


Remove your personal information:

  • Remove your friends:
  1. In a web browser, sign in at the Xbox friends page.
  2. Locate and select the friend you want to remove.
  3. Select Remove.
  4. Select Yes.
  5. Repeat for all friends.
  • Clear your profile information:
    1. Sign in at the Edit profile page.
    2. Select Customise profile.
    3. Change the personalised fields of the profile.
    4. Select Save to save the changes.
  • Change the name on your billing contact information:
    1. Sign in at My account.
    2. Select Payment & billing (you may be prompted to enter a code sent to you that is associated with your Microsoft account).
    3. Select Billing info, and select Edit profile.
    4. Change the first name on the account to "Close" and change the last name to "Account."
    5. Select Save to save the changes. (This can also be performed on a console.)
  • Remove your payment options:
    1. Sign in at My account.
    2. Select Payment & billing (you may be prompted to enter a code sent to you that is associated with your Microsoft account).
    3. Select Payment options.
    4. Select your payment option, and then select Remove.
  • Set your preferred contact information at the Microsoft profile center:
    1. In a web browser, sign in at the Profile center. Make sure that you sign in with your Microsoft account.
    2. Select My profile and My personal information to set or remove any personal information.
    3. Select Manage communications to set or remove contact preferences.

To close your existing Microsoft account

Now that your Xbox account has been moved to a new Microsoft account, you can close the original account.

For individual accounts

To completely remove your Microsoft account, you must first remove your personal information from that account, as described earlier in this article. Removing your Microsoft account information will close the account. Be aware that once you close your Microsoft account, you cannot reopen it. 

When this process is complete, all content associated with this account, including paid downloadable content, Zune content, access to saved games, and achievements, will be permanently deleted.
Also note that your current Microsoft account and gamer tag will not be available for any future Xbox Live accounts. All information will be permanently removed.
  1. Make sure that there are no outstanding subscriptions or payments due on the account.
  2. Sign in at Microsoft account.
  3. Select Security, and then scroll down to more security settings.
  4. At the bottom of the page, select Close my account.
  5. Select Next.
  6. Review and check all the boxes on the page.
  7. From the drop-down menu, select a reason for closing your account, and then select Mark account for closure.
  8. Problems closing the account:
    • If you have trouble closing the account due to existing subscriptions, this means you haven't moved your Xbox account to a new Microsoft account. Follow step 5 of “Remove your personal information” above to move your Xbox account.

For family or child accounts


If you want to close a Microsoft account that is a parent of a child account, that child account must be moved to a new account before you can close the current account.
